Michigan Military Moms
November 16th, 2005
I just got back from a meeting of the north-suburban branch of Michigan Military Moms.
It was my honor to represent the Hobbit Hole, and speak to all those great moms (and dads). I packed up a big box of the “stuff” we do, and they politely sat through two hours of my dog-and-pony show.
It was also my privilege to meet one of the sons who received one of our knives. He said to say thanks to all the great folks here in the Hobbit Hole. He said he was “stuned” when he saw the knife.
If any of the MMMs visit here, let me say it was a thrill for me to attend your meeting, and we all admire the patriotism of you and your sons and daughters.

I was at the Military Mom’s meeting last night. Today I had the opportunity to talk to my son on the computer (he’s in Iraq). I gave him your web site address. He said he had already received a sheathed knife from you, and he doesn’t know how you got his address. He did say to tell you that it is the only USEFUL thing he has gotten over there. He also said to tell you that on the second day that he had your knife, that he rescued a soldier from an overturned vehicle with the knife. Thanks!!

Thank you SO much for telling us your son’s story. I try to add a sticker to the knife saying “got your name from Military Moms”, but sometimes I forget, and a soldier gets a knife with no clue how someone got his name. I have to apologize for that.
We’ve had other stories of lives being saved with Hobbit Hole knives. For us in the Hobbit Hole, it is inspiring to know that our humble gifts are being used for purposes far more important than just opening a MRE pouch.

Thank you so much for all you do for the troops. You are more than generous in your support and sending knives to the troop. We also appreciated you coming to our meeting this past Wednesday evening -

Thanks a million from the bottom of my Marine Mom heart for your caring, concern, and support of our sons & daughters. It was God who lead me to you and your support group. My neighbor owns “Highest Honor” trophy shop where they engrave your knives website. I submitted my Marine son’s name in Iraq for a knife….the rest is history.
Very Proud Marine Mom,
L. Van Horn

Lois, I think how this operation started, and the closest analogy I can think of is the parable of the mustard seed from the Gospels.
An emergency request for snacks, underwear, and hygiene items from a Chaplain in Afghanistan with a burned-down PX led our group to send over all sorts of goodies and necessities. Being culinary- and shopping-challenged, I thought long and hard about how I could best contribute. Five CRKT 5700 folding knives with our URL on it was the humble result.
We’re now at almost 1050 knives, plus other tools and supplies, and I’m always looking out for more.
It’s been our privilege and pleasure to honor your son’s service with something Soldiers and Marines can really use, but so few people comprehend.
Rick
